Sri Lanka Family Itinerary: What Actually Works With Kids
Elephants, trains and beaches
Free quote · No deposit · No obligation
A Sri Lanka family itinerary should keep driving days under three hours, mix wildlife with beach, and avoid back-to-back cultural sites. Ten days works well: Negombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, an Udawalawe elephant safari, then five nights split between Mirissa and Bentota. A private van means car seats, snack stops and the freedom to leave when the children have had enough.
Is this the right Sri Lanka itinerary for you?
The failure mode with kids in Sri Lanka is too many temples and too much driving. Elephants, trains and beaches carry the trip; culture works in small doses.
Best for: Families with children aged roughly 4 to 14; multi-generational groups; anyone who needs flexibility more than coverage.

Day-by-day itinerary
This is a proven route, not a fixed script. Every day can be reordered, extended or dropped - tell your driver in the morning and the plan adjusts. Drive times below are realistic road durations, not map estimates.
Day 1: Arrive at CMB, overnight Negombo
| Transfer | Airport to Negombo, 20-30 min |
| Morning | Land, meet-and-greet, very short transfer - crucial with tired children. |
| Afternoon | Pool, beach, early dinner, early night. |
| Overnight | Negombo |
Day 2: Negombo to Sigiriya
| Transfer | Negombo to Sigiriya, 3.5-4 hrs |
| Morning | Break the drive with a stop at Pinnawala or a roadside fruit stall. Longest driving day of the trip - get it done early. |
| Afternoon | Pool time on arrival. Do not schedule anything else. |
| Overnight | Sigiriya / Habarana |
Day 3: Sigiriya or Pidurangala, plus elephants
| Transfer | Short local drives only |
| Morning | Climb Pidurangala (USD 3) rather than Sigiriya if the children are under about 10 - it is shorter, cheaper and has the better view. |
| Afternoon | Afternoon jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla (August to October) or Hurulu Eco Park year-round. Wild elephants at close range. |
| Overnight | Sigiriya / Habarana |
Day 4: To Kandy
| Transfer | Sigiriya to Kandy, 2.5-3 hrs |
| Morning | Dambulla Cave Temple if the group is up for it - 30 minutes is enough. |
| Afternoon | Kandy lake, then a Kandyan dance and fire-walking show at 5pm. Children reliably love it. |
| Overnight | Kandy |
Day 5: Kandy to Ella by train
| Transfer | Kandy to Ella, 4 hrs by train or 4-5 hrs by road |
| Morning | Take the hill-country train. Children love it, the views are extraordinary, and it breaks the driving monotony. Driver takes the luggage. |
| Afternoon | Driver meets you at Ella station. Settle in. |
| Overnight | Ella |
Day 6: Ella
| Transfer | No transfer |
| Morning | Nine Arches Bridge in the morning - children enjoy watching the train cross. |
| Afternoon | Little Adam's Peak is a manageable 45-minute climb for most children over six. Or the zip-line for teenagers. |
| Overnight | Ella |
Day 7: Ella to Udawalawe
| Transfer | Ella to Udawalawe, 2.5-3 hrs |
| Morning | Descend through Wellawaya. |
| Afternoon | Afternoon safari at Udawalawe - wild elephant sightings are close to guaranteed, which matters enormously with children. Elephant Transit Home feeding at 3pm or 6pm. |
| Overnight | Udawalawe |
Day 8: To the south coast
| Transfer | Udawalawe to Mirissa, 2.5-3 hrs |
| Morning | Drive to the coast. |
| Afternoon | Beach. Nothing scheduled. |
| Overnight | Mirissa or Weligama |
Day 9: South coast
| Transfer | No transfer |
| Morning | Beach morning, or a surf lesson at Weligama. |
| Afternoon | Turtle hatchery visit, or a stilt-fishermen stop at Koggala. |
| Overnight | Mirissa or Weligama |
Day 10: Galle, then Bentota or departure
| Transfer | Mirissa to Bentota, 1.5 hrs |
| Morning | Galle Fort in the morning - ramparts, ice cream, small shops. Manageable with children in an hour or two. |
| Afternoon | Continue to Bentota for a Madu River boat safari (mangroves, monitor lizards, a cinnamon island) - reliably the children's favourite. |
| Overnight | Bentota |

From May to September we reroute the coastal legs east to Trincomalee and Pasikuda. See all 12 months compared.
