Sri Lanka 5 Day Itinerary: The Essentials Without Rushing
Colombo · Sigiriya · Kandy · Colombo
Free quote · No deposit · No obligation
A well-planned 5 day Sri Lanka itinerary covers the Cultural Triangle and the hill country: Negombo on arrival, Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, then Nuwara Eliya or Ella before returning to Colombo. Five days is not enough for both the mountains and the south coast - pick one. With a private driver you will cover roughly 600 km and see three genuinely different landscapes.
Is this the right Sri Lanka itinerary for you?
Five days works if you accept one clear trade-off: the Cultural Triangle and hill country, or the south coast. Trying to do both turns the trip into a driving holiday.
Best for: Short-haul travellers from India, the Gulf, Malaysia, Singapore and the Maldives; long-weekend trips; a first taste of the island.

Day-by-day itinerary
This is a proven route, not a fixed script. Every day can be reordered, extended or dropped - tell your driver in the morning and the plan adjusts. Drive times below are realistic road durations, not map estimates.
Day 1: Arrive at CMB, overnight Negombo
| Transfer | Airport to Negombo, 20-30 min |
| Morning | Land at Bandaranaike International (CMB). Your driver meets you inside arrivals with a name board and you are at the hotel within half an hour. |
| Afternoon | Negombo beach, the Dutch canal, and the fish market if you land early. Mostly this is a day to sleep off the flight. |
| Overnight | Negombo |
Day 2: Sigiriya and Dambulla
| Transfer | Negombo to Sigiriya, 3.5-4 hrs |
| Morning | Drive north through Kurunegala into the Cultural Triangle. Stop at Dambulla Cave Temple - five caves of painted ceilings and Buddha statues, about 90 minutes. |
| Afternoon | Settle in near Sigiriya. If you have energy, climb Pidurangala at sunset for the best view of Sigiriya itself. |
| Overnight | Sigiriya / Dambulla |
Day 3: Sigiriya rock, then Kandy
| Transfer | Sigiriya to Kandy, 2.5-3 hrs |
| Morning | Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock at 7am opening - the frescoes, the Mirror Wall, the Lion's Paw entrance and the summit palace ruins. Allow 2.5-3 hours. |
| Afternoon | Drive south to Kandy via Matale, stopping at a spice garden. Arrive in time for the 6:30pm puja at the Temple of the Tooth. |
| Overnight | Kandy |
Day 4: Tea country: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya or Ella
| Transfer | Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, 2.5-3 hrs |
| Morning | Climb into the hill country through Ramboda. Stop at Ramboda Falls and a working tea factory for a tour and tasting. |
| Afternoon | Gregory Lake, the colonial-era town centre, and the cool air at 1,900 metres. Or continue to Ella (another 2 hrs) if you prefer a younger, warmer base. |
| Overnight | Nuwara Eliya or Ella |
Day 5: Return to Colombo and depart
| Transfer | Hill country to CMB, 4.5-5.5 hrs |
| Morning | Early start. If you based in Ella, catch the Nine Arches Bridge before leaving. Descend through the tea estates. |
| Afternoon | Drive to Colombo or straight to the airport. Build in a buffer - this is a long leg. |
| Overnight | Departure |
Want it longer or shorter?
With two extra days you can add Ella properly (Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak) and a night on the south coast - see the 7 day itinerary.
How much does this tour cost?
Pricing depends on your dates, group size, vehicle and the standard of accommodation you want. The driver and vehicle portion runs USD 50-80 per day for a car and USD 70-110 for a van, all-inclusive of fuel, tolls, parking and the driver’s own costs. Hotels are quoted separately so you stay in control of that budget - from clean guesthouses to tea-estate bungalows and Galle Fort villas.

When should you travel?
Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts, so the right route depends on your month. This itinerary suits the December to March window best, when the west coast, south coast and hill country are driest. From May to September we reroute the coastal legs east to Trincomalee and Pasikuda. See all 12 months compared.
