Sri Lanka in August: Weather, Crowds, Costs and Where to Go.
Perahera and elephants. The Minneriya gathering peaks; east coast still excellent.
August combines the tail of the Kandy Esala Perahera with the peak of the Minneriya elephant gathering, when several hundred wild elephants converge on the receding reservoir. The east coast remains dry and the southwest remains under monsoon. For wildlife and culture together, August is one of the most rewarding months to visit Sri Lanka, despite the southwest rain.

- Minneriya elephant gathering (peak)
- Kandy Esala Perahera (if the lunar calendar falls in August)

Festivals and events in August
Sri Lanka’s biggest festivals follow the lunar calendar, so exact dates shift year to year. Every full moon (Poya) is a public holiday, and alcohol is not sold on those days.
- Esala Poya and the culmination of the Kandy Perahera in most years
- Nallur Festival in Jaffna - a major 25-day Hindu festival
- Minneriya elephant gathering at its peak
Practical tips for travelling in August
- The Minneriya gathering is the largest annual concentration of wild Asian elephants anywhere - go on a late-afternoon jeep safari.
- If the reservoir at Minneriya is full, elephants shift to Kaudulla; ask your driver to check which park is active that week.
- Nallur Festival in Jaffna is extraordinary and rarely seen by international travellers - a genuine off-track highlight.
- Late August often brings the first improvement on the south coast, making a Galle add-on viable at the end of a trip.
- Wilpattu is excellent in August and far quieter than Yala.
