Quick answer

Ella is a small mountain town in Sri Lanka's hill country at 1,000 metres, famous for the Nine Arches Bridge, the Little Adam's Peak hike and one of the world's most photographed train journeys. It sits at the southern end of the Kandy-Ella railway line and is the standard base for two nights in the hills. The town itself is walkable in ten minutes; the reason to come is what surrounds it.

Recommended stayTwo nights. One night forces you to choose between Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock, and misses either sunrise or the train at Nine Arches. Three nights is genuinely comfortable if you like the pace of the town.
Best seasonElla is at its clearest from December to March, but the tea country is green year-round. The southwest monsoon (May to September) brings mist and afternoon showers - atmospheric rather than a problem.

Why go to Ella

Ella is where the Sri Lankan hill country reveals its scale. Nine Arches Bridge in the mist, Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, Ella Rock as a proper half-day hike, tea plantations to every horizon, and the train from Kandy that everyone photographs. It is a genuinely small town but no visitor to the island regrets coming here.

Best things to do in Ella

  1. Little Adam's Peak at sunrise - a 45-minute climb, easy for most fitness levels, and the best light of the day over the valley.
  2. Nine Arches Bridge - check the train timetable with your driver, then be there ten minutes before a passing. The train crossing the viaduct is the shot everyone comes for.
  3. Ella Rock - a proper 3-hour round-trip hike with a local guide from the trailhead, USD 10 or so.
  4. Take the hill-country train for at least one leg. Kandy to Ella is the classic, but Ella to Nanu Oya is the most scenic 90-minute stretch.
  5. Ella Zip-line if you have children - 520 metres across the valley, adjacent to Little Adam's Peak.
  6. Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave - 15 minutes out of town.
  7. A cooking class - Ella has some of the best on the island.

Which train is the best in Sri Lanka?

The hill-country train between Kandy and Ella (about 7 hours, or 90 minutes for the Nanu Oya to Ella stretch alone) is regularly ranked among the world's most scenic rail journeys. Reserved second class, right-hand side, is the right combination.

Is Little Adam's Peak or Ella Rock the better hike?

Little Adam's Peak is short (45 minutes up), easy and has the best sunrise view - ideal for most visitors and for families. Ella Rock is a full 3-hour hike with a scramble at the top and better as a mid-morning outing with a guide.
