Why HireATourDriver.lk

Sri Lanka travel that actually bends around you.

A real private driver, a flexible route, a written quote in under an hour. No deposit to get started, no hard-sell, no awkward surprises on the road.

Short answer

HireATourDriver.lk is a Sri Lanka-registered private-driver service that gives you a vetted English-speaking chauffeur-guide, an air-conditioned vehicle and a route built around your plan, not ours. You get a written quote within an hour on WhatsApp, no deposit is required to confirm, and you can adjust the itinerary any day of your trip. Rated 5.0 stars by every traveller we have driven so far.

  • Fully insured drivers & vehicles
  • No deposit for a written quote
  • Reply within 1 hour, 7 days a week
  • Fully flexible daily itinerary

Six things every traveller gets

What is actually included on every trip.

Vetted, trained chauffeur-guides

Every driver is personally interviewed, English-tested and screened on local knowledge before we add them to the roster. Most have been driving guests across Sri Lanka for 5-15 years. They know which Yala gate opens earliest, which Ella viewpoint catches the mist, which temple expects covered knees. You are not getting a random airport cab.

Air-conditioned, well-kept vehicles

Sedan, SUV, van or minibus - all serviced on a fixed schedule, inspected after every multi-day trip and fully commercially insured. No old suspensions, no broken AC, no dodgy tyres on hill-country switchbacks. Child seats and booster seats available on request.

A route that bends around you

Want to stay an extra night in Ella? Drop a stop you no longer feel like doing? Add a last-minute whale-watching boat because the sea is calm? Just tell your driver that morning. Our drivers carry no commission with hotels or restaurants, so there is nothing nudging you off your plan.

Local, honest advice

The best time to climb Sigiriya is 06:30 - not 10:00 when the guided groups arrive. The Ella train is worth doing one direction, not both. The Pinnawala elephant orphanage is not an ethical experience. We tell you this before you book, not after.

A transparent price

Your quote itemises the per-day driver fee, fuel allowance, tolls, the driver's food and accommodation, and any entrance tickets you asked us to pre-arrange. No service fee hidden inside the daily rate. If your actual trip comes in under estimate (fuel is cheaper, you skipped a day), we tell you.

A human on WhatsApp, always

Before you book: unlimited questions, no obligation. During the trip: your driver has the WhatsApp of our office, so if anything odd happens (sick guest, missed train, hotel over-booked) we fix it from both ends. After: honest answers if you want to come back.

How we are different

Why travellers switch to us from the big booking sites.

Not a reseller

Big travel aggregators act as middlemen - they take your booking, pass it to a local driver and keep 15-25% of the price. You pay more, the driver earns less, and if anything goes wrong you are stuck between two support desks in two countries. We are the driver company. Your money reaches your driver, and your driver has our direct number if something changes.

Not a tour package

Fixed-departure tour packages lock you into other travellers\' pace. Private-driver travel means you choose the departure day, the hotels (or we book them for you with no markup), the lunch stops, the detours. If a village festival is happening when you pass through, your driver will slow down for you to see it. A tour bus will not.

Not a taxi app

Ride-hail apps work for a short airport hop in Colombo. They do not work for a 7-day island trip. You cannot pre-book a specific driver, there is no way to keep the same vehicle across days, the pricing jumps with surge, and nothing is in writing. Our quote is a document you can forward to your travel buddy before anyone pays.

No deposit to get a quote

Most Sri Lanka driver sites ask for a 20-30% deposit before they will even confirm a price. We give you the firm quote in under an hour on WhatsApp with zero commitment. You decide to proceed on your terms, in your currency, through a secure link. If you cancel more than 14 days out, we refund in full.

Same-day pickups when things change

Flight delayed? Boat trip ran over? Rain changed your plan? We can usually dispatch a chauffeur within 2-4 hours in Colombo, the south coast and the cultural triangle. Call or WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly if we can - or if we cannot, who else to try. We would rather lose a booking than leave you stranded.

You keep the same driver

On the big platforms, each leg of your trip gets a different driver. You repeat your preferences, you re-explain your plan, you lose the briefing of what you already saw. With us you have one driver for your whole Sri Lanka trip. By day three they know you take your coffee with less milk and that your mother needs ten minutes extra at every stop. That is the trip people come back for.

Honest answers

The questions people usually ask before booking.

Can I trust an independent Sri Lanka driver company I have never heard of?

Fair question. Three ways to check: (1) We publish real Google reviews - search HireATourDriver.lk Google reviews, every one is public. (2) We are a Sri Lanka-registered business with an office in Colombo you can call before paying anything. (3) We do not take a deposit to send you the quote, which means your downside is zero while you decide. Compare that to the deposit-first platforms.

How is this different from Sri Lanka Private Driver, GetYourGuide or Viator?

Those are good platforms with real coverage. The difference is model: aggregators resell local drivers at a markup, we are the local driver company directly. You pay less, your driver earns more, support goes through one team not two. If you are weighing us against another specific option, see our head-to-head comparisons under /compare/ - we show the honest trade-offs, not just the pros.

What happens if my flight is delayed or my plan changes mid-trip?

Delays are built into every airport-transfer quote - we track your flight number, so if you land late we are there late. Mid-trip changes are the whole point of travelling with us. Say the hill-country weather turns and you want to drop Nuwara Eliya for an extra night on the south coast. Tell your driver that morning, we rework the hotel bookings, you keep going. No change fee for the switch itself.

Do I need to tip my driver, and if so how much?

Tipping is not obligatory in Sri Lanka but is appreciated for a multi-day private driver who has gone above the basics. Guideline: USD 10-15 per day of driving for a trip you enjoyed. For a one-off airport transfer, USD 2-5. If you want to tip in advance through the booking, we pass it to the driver in full with zero deduction.

Can you book my hotels and tickets as well, or only the driving?

Both. Many travellers book their own hotels on Booking.com and just pay us for driving - that is cheapest. Others want us to arrange everything (hotels, Sigiriya tickets, Yala safari jeep, the Mirissa whale boat). We charge the same price the venue charges, no markup, and bundle it into the single quote. You decide which model you want when you reply to the first quote.

What vehicles do you have and which should I choose?

Sedan (Toyota Axio / Allion) for 1-2 travellers with light luggage. SUV (Toyota RAV4 / KDH SUV) for 2-3 travellers or hill-country comfort. Van (Toyota KDH high-roof) for 4-7 travellers or anyone carrying a lot of luggage, with real headroom. Mini-coach (14-25 seats) for groups. Our full fleet with photos, seats, luggage capacity and per-day pricing is at /vehicles/.

How far in advance should I book my Sri Lanka trip?

For peak season (December through February, UK/EU summer holidays, and Christmas/New Year weeks) book 2-6 months out so you can secure your preferred vehicle and the best hill-country tea bungalows. For May through September, 2-4 weeks is usually enough. For same-day or next-day pickups, WhatsApp us - we often can, especially in Colombo and the south.

What if I need to cancel after I book?

Full refund if you cancel more than 14 days before your start date. Seven to 14 days out, we refund 80% - we have already blocked your driver for those days. Three to seven days out, 50%. Inside 72 hours, we try our best to reassign the driver and refund what we can, usually 30-50%. Full policy at /cancellation-policy/.
