Month by month
When to Visit Sri Lanka: All 12 Months Compared.
Two monsoons hit opposite coasts, so somewhere in Sri Lanka is always in season. Pick your month and we will point you at the right side of the island.
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination because two monsoons affect opposite coasts. December to March is driest on the west coast, south coast and hill country - the peak season and the best window for the classic Colombo-Kandy-Ella-Galle route. May to September is driest on the east coast, making Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Arugam Bay the right call in those months. The Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya works almost year-round.

Why the month matters more than the season
Most destinations have one high season. Sri Lanka has two, running on opposite calendars, because the island sits between two monsoon systems. The southwest (Yala) monsoon brings rain to the west coast, south coast and hill country from roughly May to September. The northeast (Maha) monsoon brings rain to the east and north from roughly October to January.
This is good news: there is no bad month to visit Sri Lanka, only a wrong region for the month. A trip in July that tries to include Mirissa will be disappointing; the same July trip routed through Trincomalee and Arugam Bay is superb.
What this means for planning
- Pick the region to match the month, not the other way around.
- The Cultural Triangle is the constant. Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa sit in a relative rain shadow and work almost year-round.
- Build in flexibility. A private driver can reorder your route the same morning if a system moves in - the single biggest practical advantage over fixed group tours.
- Shoulder months are the value play. March, September and November give you close to peak weather at well below peak rates.
Cost varies more by month than most travellers expect
Christmas and New Year, plus the Kandy Esala Perahera window, are the most expensive periods of the year - hotel rates can double or triple. September and October are the cheapest. The weather difference between late November and mid-December is small; the price difference is large.

When to visit Sri Lanka - common questions
What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka?
For the classic west-and-south-coast plus hill-country route, January to March is the best window - dry, sunny and reliable. For the east coast and Arugam Bay surf, June to August is best. There is no single best month for the whole island because two monsoons affect opposite coasts.
What is the cheapest time to visit Sri Lanka?
September and October are the cheapest months, with hotel and driver rates well below peak and cultural sites almost empty. The trade-off is unpredictable inter-monsoon rain, which a flexible private itinerary can largely work around.
Which months should I avoid in Sri Lanka?
No month is bad island-wide. Avoid the south and west coasts from May to September and the east coast from October to January. October is the most unpredictable month overall because inter-monsoon storms can affect any region.
When is whale watching season in Sri Lanka?
Mirissa on the south coast runs from November to April, with peak sightings of blue whales and sperm whales in January and February. Trincomalee on the east coast has a shorter season from May to September.
When is the Kandy Esala Perahera?
The Kandy Esala Perahera runs for ten nights and culminates on Esala Poya, which usually falls in late July or August. Exact dates follow the lunar calendar and are announced annually. Book accommodation four to six months ahead.
Does it rain all day during monsoon in Sri Lanka?
Usually not. Monsoon rain commonly arrives as heavy afternoon downpours that pass within an hour or two, particularly inland. Mornings are frequently clear, which is why early starts work so well in the wetter months.
Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts. December through March is dry on the west coast, south coast and hill country - the window most tourists book. May through September is dry on the east coast and north. March, April and October are inter-monsoon shoulder months with scattered showers across the island. Pick your month by which coast you want.
