Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's premier surf destination, on the south-east coast. Its right-hand point break at Main Point is one of the best in Asia, and the surf season runs April to October - opposite to the surf beaches of the south coast (Weligama, Ahangama), which peak November to March. Arugam is a laid-back beach village with a strong seasonal international surf scene.
Why go to Arugam Bay
For surfers, Arugam Bay is the reason to come to Sri Lanka in July or August. Main Point is a world-class right-hand point break, Baby Point suits beginners and Whiskey Point sits between the two. Beyond surf, the town is small, relaxed, and connects to Kumana National Park and the sacred Kataragama town nearby.
Best things to do in Arugam Bay
- Main Point surf - a world-class right-hand point break, best surfed on a low tide. Rentals and lessons everywhere along the strip.
- Baby Point for beginners - forgiving, whitewater sessions.
- Whiskey Point - a 10-minute drive from Main Point, an easier right-hander.
- Kumana National Park - the eastern extension of Yala, quieter, good for birds and elephants.
- Kataragama sacred multi-faith pilgrimage town - a full day if festival timing allows.
- Lagoon boat trip - crocodiles, mangroves, sunset.
