Sri Lanka Private Transfers: Every Route, Distance and Price.

Real distances, real drive times and indicative prices for the transfers travellers actually book - airport runs, hill-country legs and coast-to-coast crossings.

Quick answer

A private transfer in Sri Lanka costs roughly USD 15-40 for short airport runs (CMB to Negombo or Colombo), USD 60-90 for mid-range legs like Colombo Airport to Kandy, and USD 120-230 for long hauls like Colombo to Jaffna. Fuel, expressway tolls and parking are always included. Drive times are longer than distances suggest because the average road speed is around 40 km/h outside the expressways.

Price bands are indicative for one-way private transfers and vary with vehicle, season and exact pickup point. Multi-day hire works out cheaper per day than booking legs separately.

How Sri Lankan drive times actually work

Distances on a Sri Lankan map are misleading. Outside the two expressways, average road speed is around 40 km/h - roads pass through towns, share space with tuk-tuks, buses and occasionally elephants, and the hill-country sections are genuinely slow by design. A 140 km hill-country leg takes four to five hours, not two.

The expressways change everything on two routes

  • E01 Southern Expressway (Colombo to Matara): puts Galle within three hours of the airport and Mirissa within three and a half.
  • E03 Katunayake Expressway (Airport to Colombo): 35 km in around 45 minutes.

Everything else runs on ordinary roads, which is why a private driver beats self-driving for most visitors - see why self-driving is rarely worth it.

Single transfer or hire the driver for the whole trip?

If your trip involves more than two or three transfers, hiring a driver for the full duration is almost always cheaper and simpler than booking legs one at a time. A multi-day rate covers everything - fuel, tolls, parking, the driver’s meals and accommodation - and removes every subsequent booking decision.

Good to know

Sri Lanka transfers - common questions

How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to Kandy?

A private car from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) to Kandy costs roughly USD 60-90 and takes 3 to 3.5 hours for the 95 km. A van seating 6-8 costs roughly USD 85-120. Fuel, expressway tolls and parking are included, and the driver waits with a name board in arrivals.

How long does it take to drive across Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is about 430 km north to south and 225 km east to west, but average road speed outside the expressways is around 40 km/h. Colombo to Jaffna takes 7-8 hours; Trincomalee to Colombo takes about 6. Most travellers break long crossings with a stop in the Cultural Triangle.

Is it cheaper to book transfers separately or hire a driver for the whole trip?

Hiring a driver for the full trip is usually cheaper if you need more than two or three transfers, and it removes every subsequent booking. A multi-day rate includes fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's own meals and accommodation.

Are airport transfers available at night in Sri Lanka?

Yes, 24 hours. Bandaranaike International (CMB) handles a large volume of night arrivals and our drivers meet every flight. We track your flight and adjust pickup automatically - there is no charge for delays.

Can I add sightseeing stops to a transfer?

Yes. Stops are the main advantage of a private transfer over a taxi. Tell your driver in the morning and they will build the timing around it. Adding one or two stops rarely changes the price much.
