The South Coast Loop: Mirissa, Ahangama and Hiriketiya in Three Slow Days

Three bays, three moods, three nights. The soft version of Sri Lanka's south coast if you want to swim, surf a little and still sleep well.

Quick answer

Mirissa, Ahangama and Hiriketiya form a 55-kilometre south coast loop that pairs blue-whale watching, beginner surf schools and a horseshoe-shaped swimming bay. Three to four days is enough. The best stretch is December to March. A private driver connects all three bays plus Galle Fort in under an hour of total driving, so you can pick where to sleep based on vibe rather than logistics.

Mirissa for the whales and the sunset point

November through April is blue-whale season off Mirissa. Dawn boat departures work best. Afternoons are for the sheltered east end of the bay or the Coconut Hill viewpoint at sunset. Stay two nights.

Ahangama for the long, uncrowded surf

Ahangama draws beginner and intermediate surfers to its three main breaks. Lessons are cheap and widely available. The village has quietly become a small cafe scene without losing its character.

Hiriketiya for a swim-friendly horseshoe

The protected inner bay at Hiriketiya is calm enough for easy swimming, with a reef point for longer waves at the far right. Add Dickwella and the Hoo-maniya blowhole on the drive back.
