Sri Lanka from the UK: Flights, Visa and When to Go
A direct 11-hour flight, a free tourist ETA and a dry season that lines up with the British winter - Sri Lanka is one of the easiest long-haul trips from the UK.
From the UK, SriLankan Airlines flies non-stop London Heathrow to Colombo in about 10 hours 45 minutes, and from 23 October 2026 British Airways adds a non-stop Gatwick service for the winter season. Most UK passport holders now get a free 30-day tourist ETA, applied for online before you fly. The best time to travel is the British winter, December to March, when Sri Lanka's south and west coasts and hill country are at their driest.
The flight: one direct option, several one-stops
SriLankan Airlines is the only airline flying non-stop from London Heathrow (LHR) to Colombo (CMB), with roughly seven flights a week and a typical flight time of about 10 hours 45 minutes. From 23 October 2026, British Airways begins a non-stop London Gatwick (LGW) service three times a week for the winter schedule. If dates or price push you off the direct flights, Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar Airways (via Doha) and Etihad (via Abu Dhabi) all offer smooth one-stop options.
Visa: most UK travellers now pay nothing
As of 25 May 2026, Sri Lanka made its tourist ETA free for a list of 40 nationalities that includes the United Kingdom. The tourist ETA covers a 30-day stay with double entry. You still need to apply - do it online at the official portal eta.gov.lk before departure, where approval usually lands within 24 to 72 hours. Always confirm the current rule for your passport, as the free list can change.
When to go: the winter escape works perfectly
Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite coasts, so there is a dry region almost every month. For UK travellers the timing is ideal: December to March, the heart of the British winter, is the driest, sunniest window for the classic route - Colombo, the hill country, the south coast beaches and Galle. If you can only travel in the UK summer (May to September), we simply flip the itinerary toward the east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, which is dry in exactly that window. Jet lag and arrival
Sri Lanka is 5.5 hours ahead of UK time (4.5 hours in British Summer Time), so the shift is gentler than a trip to the Far East. Overnight flights from Heathrow land in Colombo in the morning, which means you can meet your driver and start moving the same day rather than losing a night. We build the first day gently - a short transfer and a relaxed overnight near the airport or the west coast.
Getting around: skip the hire car
UK visitors are used to driving, but Sri Lanka drives on the left with very different road conditions, and a foreign licence is not straightforward here.
