Sri Lanka from Malaysia: Flights, Visa and When to Go

A direct 3.5-hour flight from Kuala Lumpur, a free tourist ETA and barely any time difference - Sri Lanka is one of the easiest short-haul escapes from Malaysia.

Quick answer

From Malaysia, several airlines fly non-stop from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Colombo (CMB) in about 3 hours 30 minutes, including AirAsia, Batik Air, Malaysia Airlines, SriLankan Airlines and FitsAir. Malaysian passport holders get a free 30-day tourist ETA, applied for online before you fly. The best time to travel is December to March, when Sri Lanka's south and west coasts and hill country are at their driest - though the short flight and small time difference make Sri Lanka easy year-round.

The flight: a short, well-served hop

Kuala Lumpur is one of the best-connected cities to Colombo. Non-stop flights run several times a day on AirAsia, Batik Air, Malaysia Airlines, SriLankan Airlines and FitsAir, with a typical flight time of about 3 hours 30 minutes. That short-haul reach is why so many Malaysian families and couples treat Sri Lanka as a long-weekend or one-week trip rather than a major expedition.

Visa: free for Malaysian travellers

As of 25 May 2026, Sri Lanka made its tourist ETA free of charge for a list of 40 nationalities that includes Malaysia. The tourist ETA covers a 30-day stay. You still need to apply - do it online at the official portal eta.gov.lk before departure, where approval usually arrives within 24 to 72 hours. Always confirm the current rule for your passport, as the free list can change.

When to go: December to March is driest

Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite coasts, so there is a dry region almost every month. For the classic route - Colombo, the hill country, the south coast beaches and Galle - December to March is the driest, sunniest window. Travelling in the middle of the year (May to September)? We simply flip the itinerary toward the east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, which is dry in exactly that window. See our full best-time guide.

No jet lag, easy arrival

Sri Lanka is just 2.5 hours behind Malaysia, so there is effectively no jet lag - a big advantage on a short trip. Morning and daytime flights from KL mean you can meet your driver and start exploring the same day. We keep the first day gentle - a short transfer and a relaxed overnight near the airport or the west coast.

Getting around: a private driver, not a hire car

Sri Lanka drives on the left, but road conditions and driving style differ a lot from Malaysia, and a foreign licence is not straightforward here. A private driver-guide is the standard, low-stress choice - your own air-conditioned vehicle, someone who knows the roads, and no navigation or parking to worry about.
