Sri Lanka from Germany: Flights, Visa and When to Go
A direct 10-hour flight from Frankfurt, a free tourist ETA for German passports and a dry season over the European winter - Sri Lanka is a natural long-haul choice.
SriLankan Airlines flies non-stop from Frankfurt to Colombo in about 10 hours, three times a week, with Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad offering one-stop options via the Gulf. German passport holders now get a free 30-day tourist ETA, applied for online before departure. The European winter, December to March, is the driest, sunniest window for Sri Lanka's south, west and hill country.
The flight: direct from Frankfurt
SriLankan Airlines flies non-stop from Frankfurt (FRA) to Colombo (CMB) in roughly 10 hours, currently on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. For more flexibility, Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar Airways (via Doha) and Etihad (via Abu Dhabi) run frequent, comfortable one-stop services from Frankfurt, Munich and other German airports.
Visa: free for German travellers
As of 25 May 2026, Sri Lanka made its tourist ETA free for 40 nationalities including Germany. The permit covers a 30-day stay with double entry. You still apply - online at the official portal eta.gov.lk, with approval usually within 24 to 72 hours. Confirm the current rule for your passport before booking, as the free list can change.
When to go: escape the German winter
Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite coasts, so somewhere is always dry. For German travellers the classic route - Colombo, hills, south coast, Galle - is best from December to March, precisely when Germany is cold and grey. If you travel in the European summer, the east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay is the dry side, and we plan around it. See the best-time guide.
Time difference
Sri Lanka is 4.5 hours ahead of Germany in winter (3.5 hours in European summer), so jet lag is mild. Overnight flights arrive in Colombo in the morning, letting you start the trip the same day with a gentle first stage.
Getting around
Sri Lanka drives on the left and the roads demand local know-how, so self-drive is rarely relaxing on holiday. A private driver-guide with an air-conditioned vehicle - and German-friendly communication arranged where needed - is the comfortable choice.
