How to Choose a Licensed Tour Guide in Sri Lanka

The three checks that separate a real SLTDA-licensed guide from the roadside hustle.

Quick answer

A licensed Sri Lanka tour guide carries a Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) card issued after a formal course. Verify by asking to see the card and noting the ID number. For most private-driver trips you do not need a separate licensed guide - our chauffeur-guides are trained for storytelling at every major site. Site-specific licensed guides are only required at a few locations, notably Anuradhapura's inner sacred area.

SLTDA, National and Chauffeur-Guide licences

SLTDA issues several tiers - National guide (full language and site qualification), Area guide (region-specific) and Chauffeur-Guide (combines driving and site commentary). HireATourDriver.lk drivers hold the Chauffeur-Guide tier.

When you need a dedicated licensed guide

Anuradhapura inner sacred city often requires a licensed site guide. Dambulla, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are self-guided but a knowledgeable chauffeur-guide covers them well.

Three verification checks

Ask to see the SLTDA card. Confirm the languages and areas listed. Check the expiry date. Real guides are proud of their licence.

Frequently asked questions

Is a chauffeur-guide the same as a tour guide?

Overlapping but distinct. A chauffeur-guide is licensed to drive and give site commentary. A tour guide is licensed to lead but not drive.

Do I need both a driver AND a guide?

For most trips, a chauffeur-guide is enough. A specialist guide is worth it for in-depth days at Anuradhapura or Kandy.
