A 14-day Sri Lanka itinerary with a private driver typically covers the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya and Dambulla), Kandy, the hill country (Nuwara Eliya and Ella), Yala or Udawalawe safari and the south coast beaches (Mirissa, Galle). Two nights per base keeps the pace sustainable. The whole route runs roughly 1,100 to 1,300 kilometres and costs USD 700 to 1,100 in driver and fuel for a sedan, excluding hotels and entrance tickets.
Days 1 to 3: arrive and ease in
Fly into CMB, overnight in Negombo rather than Colombo on arrival. Drive to Sigiriya on day two. Climb Pidurangala at sunrise on day three, Sigiriya rock mid-morning, Dambulla caves after lunch.
Days 4 to 8: Kandy, hill country, Ella
Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, then the scenic train Kandy to Ella via Nanu Oya. Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock if you are fit. Two nights Ella, two nights Nuwara Eliya tea bungalow optional.
Days 9 to 11: safari and south coast
Udawalawe for elephants or Yala for leopards (we recommend an early-morning safari). Drive to Mirissa for whale watching and two days of beach.
Days 12 to 14: Galle, Bentota, back to Colombo
Galle Fort, Bentota river safari or beach day, overnight in Colombo near the airport, fly out.
