Ask a local
What currency does Sri Lanka use and can I pay with card?
A quick, honest answer from a Sri Lanka travel expert.
Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, supermarkets and shopping malls in Colombo, Kandy and Galle. Rural areas, small guesthouses, tuk-tuks and market stalls are cash-only. Bring USD or EUR to change at the airport or a bank; ATMs are widely available in towns. Budget around USD 40-100 per day per person outside accommodation and tours.
